5 Harmful Products You Should Replace in 2017 and 5 Organic Versions You Should Try

One of our favorite self-care rituals we do every January is our Annual Product Detox.

This is how it goes:

1. Clear out your cabinets and take stock of the products you’ve accumulated over the past year. Recycle the ones you’ve used up or those that have expired.

But here’s the really important part:

2. Use this as an opportunity to switch out products that may contain harmful ingredients for ones that are actually good for you. Take the opportunity to love yourself and the planet.

It happens to the best of us. Less than natural products sneak into our cabinets and we need this Annual Product Detox to get them out.

That said, we’ve done the groundwork for you. We’ve selected the 5 most popular personal care products (from face wash to hairspray) and identified harmful ingredients that you should swap out of your routine. We’ve also recommended a few top sellers from John Masters™ Organics along with a little incentive to help you make this transition.

Arm yourself with this list and get detoxing.

Face Wash

Look for Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA). These are some of the most common chemicals used in face wash, used to adjust the pH balance, but are major skin irritants and have been linked to organ damage.

Replace with: Rose Foaming Face Wash, for a gentle all natural cleanse

Moisturizer

Toss anything with “fragrance” as an ingredient. The term fragrance was created to hide a company’s “secret formula” and just about anything can be hidden within.

Replace with: Rose & Apricot Antioxidant Day Crème, for natural protection against harmful bacteria

Shaving

Especially watch out for DEAs and TEAs here. The super foamy substance feels like you’re protecting your skin in the moment, but can be harmful in the long run.

Replace with: Eucalyptus & Agave 2-in-1 Face Wash & Shave Foam for before and Eucalyptus & Agave 2-in-1 Moisturizer & Aftershave for after

Shampoo

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)/sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is one of the main offenders in this category. Used as a surfactant in most non-natural shampoos, body washes, cleansers, hair treatments and cosmetics, it poses the risk of combining with other chemicals during the manufacturing process to create known carcinogens.

Replace with: Bare Unscented Shampoo for All Hair Types, made with 14 certified organic ingredients that leave hair healthy and manageable

Hairspray

You don’t want anything known as a plasticizer in your product, and phthalates fall into this description. Used to make plastics more flexible, phthalates are known endocrine disruptors. Unfortunately, they’re not always listed as an ingredient and fall into the secret “fragrance” formula.

Replace with: our USDA-certified Organic Hair Spray, for a touchable hold that’s never sticky or flaky
