How To Build A Skincare Routine

Posted on

With the high number of skincare products available, for different skin types and skin issues, developing the perfect skincare routine can be difficult.

If you are new to skincare, it’s best to start off with the basics, such as a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, suited to your skin type. From this, you can build in additional products that will enhance your overall skincare and provide tailored attention to your skin’s needs.

It’s up to you how long or short your skincare routine is, but whether you like to keep things short and simple or indulge in an opulent experience, there is a general order to follow, to get the most out of each individual product and ensure they work cohesively.  Below are the main steps that make up a skincare routine and what part they each play.

Step 1: Cleanser

The first step in every skincare routine is to cleanse the skin. Cleansing the skin removes dead skin cells, excess oil and daily pollution such as dirt and bacteria. Removing these impurities allows the skin to properly absorb products and retain moisture by balancing its PH levels. Cleaning the skin unclogs pores and allows the skin's natural oils to reach the surface. This protects the skin from the penetration of impurities which cause inflammation, visible as acne.

You can use a mild natural cleanser such as the Foaming Face Wash with Rose & Linden Flower or the silky Cleansing Balm with Kokum Butter & Sea Buckthorn for a little more indulgence. For more of an exfoliating experience you may like the Exfoliating Face Cleanser with Jojoba & Ginseng.

Step 2: Toner

Using a toner, reduces the visibility of pores, restores skin's PH balance and smooths skin texture and tone. There are many different toners available, containing brightening, hydrating and anti-aging ingredients, but the main purpose of a toner is to nourish and replenish freshly washed skin and prepare the skin for hydration.

The Toning Mist with Rose & Aloe calms and soothes the skin and can also be used to prep skin before make-up or throughout the day for a little refresh.

Step 3: Serum

Serums have a lighter formulation than moisturizer and sink into the skin more quickly, to provide instant hydration using a high concentration of active ingredients. Serums often have additional ingredients added to target individual skin needs such as aging and acne, so it is important to choose a product that is right for you.

For a lightweight serum that is rich in vitamin C, try out the Intensive Daily Serum with Vitamin C & Kakadu Plum to prevent early signs of aging and even skin tone and texture.

Step 4: Eye Treatment

Eye treatments are specifically designed for the delicate skin around the eyes. This skin is thinner and more prone to signs of aging, due to rapid small movements made by the eyes everyday. The eye area also requires special attention for eye area specific issues such as puffiness and dark circles. Eye creams and serums often include ingredients that target these areas as well as other benefits such as brightening and hydrating.

Step 5: Moisturizer

Moisturizer seals in previous products and provides ultimate hydration for the skin. It also provides skin with a protective barrier against the elements and makes skin appear more radiant and youthful. Dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to damage from hot and cold temperatures as well as UV rays, so it’s important to keep your skin’s moisture levels topped up.

To revitalise dull and dehydrated skin opt for the Antioxidant Cream with Rose & Apricot, formulated to soothe dry skin and combat free radicals. If you would prefer to use an oil to moisturize the skin, the Nourish Facial Oil With Pomegranate softens and smooths the skin's appearance and provides instant hydration.

Treatments

Not enough? You may also like to use treatments periodically to boost your skincare routine and give your skin a real treat. The Overnight Facial Mask with Pomegranate & Moroccan Rose adds a radiant and healthy glow to your skin and overtime, smooths over fine lines and wrinkles.

Indulging your skin with nourishing ingredients is the ultimate gesture of self care, so take the time to treat yourself to a curated skincare routine that works for you and your skin.
