How to look after your hair during the winter months

Posted on

The winter months can be seriously harsh on our hair. The cold and dry air, bitter winds and freezing temperatures can dehydrate your hair and make it more prone to breakage than it would be in the summer months.

If your hair is feeling the effects of the cold, try these tips to get rid of that brittle feeling and give your hair a boost of much needed hydration.

Your scalp is the most susceptible place to dehydration. It is exposed to both cold weather and intense indoor heat, and these fast and frequent changes in temperature can really damage it, and your hair strands resultingly. Of course, when our head gets cold, we naturally reach for a hat to pull down over our ears and keep the elements out, but this does our hair no good at all. Wearing hats increases the stress and friction on our hair follicles and paired with constant taking on and off you’re at risk of losing extra hair every time it’s removed.

One way of keeping your hair and scalp moisturised is to treat it with a thick, rich, moisturising conditioner once or twice a week during the winter months – or even all year round! Conditioners like this contain fatty acids, soy proteins and nourishing oils like avocado and jojoba that attract and retain moisture in the hair. Make sure you choose a conditioner that is suitable for your hair type, you don’t want to weigh it down with something too dense for your needs.

Another great way to combat the brittle texture we get especially at the ends of our hair is to use a natural hair oil. Simply rub a small amount of Nourishing Defrizzer for Dry Hair in the palms of your hands and apply from the bottom upwards. This will not only give your hair some welcome moisture, but it will also provide an extra layer of protection against the winter wind.

Dehydration affects us all in different ways. That’s why we at John Masters Organics have curated a wide range of products, meaning no hair type is left out in the cold.

If you suffer particularly with dryness we would recommend using our Shampoo for Dry Hair with Evening Primrose. Evening primrose is naturally packed with gamma linolenic acid, an anti-inflammatory Omega-6 that does wonders for dry skin and hair. It nourishes your hair from the inside out, restoring bounce and shine. The other active ingredients are jojoba seed oil and avocado oil, both rich in antioxidants and healthy fats that encourage moisture retention and hair rejuvenation.

If you have itchy or flaky scalp skin, opt for our 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner for Dry Scalp with Zinc & Sage. Our body doesn’t naturally produce zinc, which is important for protein syntheses and development, so using a shampoo rich with this mineral works to combat dryness by promoting cell health and rejuvenation. Sage purifies and soothes the scalp, whilst the added wheat amino acids condition strands, meaning they will be more manageable and less prone to that ‘frizzy’ look.

If you’re looking for a natural solution to deeply repair, recondition, and moisturise, then look no further than our Repair Conditioner for Damaged Hair with Honey & Hibiscus. If you’re in desperate need of a quick fix for brittle hair, then use our conditioner by massaging into the strands and leaving to soak for 1 to 3 minutes, depending on the level of rescue needed. This product is indulgent on all levels; moisturising, soothing and shining, you name it, this conditioner does it! The organic honey coats the hair, revitalising and protecting against further damage, whilst the hibiscus flower extract contains amino acids that repair and strengthen strands. It will leave you with healthy looking locks, and let’s face it, when it comes to hair, that’s what we all want!

After your hair is cleaned and conditioned, don’t forget to hydrate it daily with our light Hair Milk with Rose & Apricot. In addition to giving your hair hydration and shine, it’s delicate rose fragrance will stay with you all day long. Use as a defrizzing product or to provide a lightweight hold for styling all whilst maintaining a smooth bounce.

If you work in an air-conditioned space or notice that having the central heating on dries your hair and scalp out, then our Leave-in Conditioning Mist with Green Tea & Calendula is the perfect SOS product for when you need a quick frizz fix. Easy to carry around and simple to apply, this product will give your hair the added moisture it needs any time of day or night.

As well as looking after your hair and using products that are suited to your type, taking supplements is also important for retaining strength during the winter months. They will improve the condition of your scalp and locks by caring for your body from the inside out. We recommend taking a supplement that contains biotin and horsetail, such as Megi Wellness, to allow your hair to reach its full potential and look fabulous this festive season.
